moving to monterrey in july, how safe is it really? looking to connect with expats in the area

I lived in Monterrey in 2002-2003.  I did not have any problems or security concerns.  It is a big city so common sense is required and there are areas that I would not go to after dark.

Monterrey is still basically an island of sanity in a sea of danger, though it is starting to have a few issues.  Check travel.state.gov and watch the news for Monterrey-specific incidents if you're worried (I have a Google Alert set for "Monterrey, Mexico").

Hi there, Monterrey is probably the safer cities you'll get (: Everything is convenient and most people will try to speak English with you. If you live in a city, Monterrey wont be too far off. Then again, if you are a gringo or 'white' be careful. Just go out with some mexican people if you do get to meet some, not alone. I stayed there for 6 months and loved it.
