VIPER Visa Residence Requirement?

Hello All,

I have been living in Brazil for the last year and a half or so on a VIPER visa, but may have to return to the US before long. I was told when picking my visa up that I could only leave Brazil for up to 2 months per year for the first 2 years, but I can't find it in writing anywhere. All I can find is a reference to being absent for more than 2 years, and having to restart the process.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

James

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately you have been lulled into believing that the Federal Police actually know what they are talking about (or doing) - THEY DON'T.

Once you have obtained a VIPER Permanent Visa you can leave the country provided you're not absent for more than two years. Even this rule has exceptions if it is as a result of something out of your control. This is of course dependent on the fact that you actually have the visa (permanent document) and not just the protocolo.

Even during the processing of a visa you are permitted to leave the country using the protocolo for up to 90 days at a time.

Thank you for both the quick reply and the information ;-)

That makes our 'worst-case' plan a little less painful.

LOL Yeah, I know what you mean about the FP. It only took about 14 months to finally get my ID Card (RNE).
