Potential Job in Rio

Hi Guys,

I am currently going through the interview stages for a job opportunity in Rio, working on the Olympics project.

Whilst this has always been in our plans, my wife and I are expecting our first child. We are now nervous about how possible it would be to still come across with a very young child.

I am also unsure as to how much monthly salary would be required to live comfortably with one income.

From what I have read, it seems that Ipanema/Leblon are the places to be with kids, for safety reasons. However I appreciate that the cost of living is much higher in these locations.

I believe the ball park of the position is circa 16k per 4wk. It would be really good to understand if this is doable.

Also, I am concerned about how easy it will be for my wife to meet other expat mothers in the early stages until we get a grasp of the language and can integrate completely

All help much appreciated

Thanks

Hi Canyon,

If you earn anything from about R$8,000 per month and above you will be living quite well. You must also consider that the minimum wage here is R$675 per month and many families live on that solely.

It is imperative that you both learn Portuguese as soon as possible in order to get by, but in Rio you aren't going to have a lot of trouble meeting English speaking tourists and expats.

Depending on when your wife is expecting that could be a REAL advantage to you both. Should you be lucky enough for your child to be born here the child is automatically a Brazilian citizen by virtue of birth in Brazilian national territory, regardless of whatever other citizenship gained through parentage. So, this means you and your wife could immediately apply for permanent visas based on having a Brazilian child should you so desire. This is something a lot of expats would give their right arm for.

Thanks very much for the reply, really helpful.

Our child will be born in UK, but 3yrs is better than no years, if it happens..:)

Could anyone advise some MUSTS that I should ask for with the renumeration package.

I am aware that health/dental/relocation is all included. I just wasnt sure whether there was anything else which I may be overlooking...?

Thanks

Hi Canyon,

Some companies pay an education allowance, you may want to ask about that even though your child is quite young.

Regardless of being a foreigner you are entitled to certain benefits under Brazilian labor laws, 13° salary, holidays, meal vouchers, maybe even the company will have a plan to purchase basic foods (Cesta básica) for their employees. Check into all of those.
