Whereas in Hungary (Heviz) it is very acceptable I have to say, but still a few HUF 100 (250 at the time), to Zalaegerszeg it is more exepensive. I used to bring my wife to the Heviz Lake by car but she returned by bus,

In Felsopahok (a small villiage) not bad at all (at least once per hour) to Heviz or Zalaegerszeg.  (also direct 2 x  per day to Budapest we rarely used)

All was good I have to say.


On Turkey a trip is fixed, with a card is around TRY 12, around EUR 0.40 for trips which can be more than an hour.

Good and relatively frequent but not very prediciable.

The new high-speed trains in Turkey run on only limited routes but they have no equivalent in Hungary on any routes.

I am not sure we can compare countries, each and everyone is different.


Just like you can not compare the UK with any other European country or the Netherlands for that matter.

What about the Chinese trains to Belgrade?

They aren't running yet: still under construction, with a report a few months ago that work had actually stopped.


And it's not particularly fast in Hungary: 160kph (99mph).

Interesting.  I didn't know that.   It reminds me of the Addis to Djibouti  line which was also funded by the Chinese.  It was intended to replace the old railway but due to all sorts of problems, it never actually reaches the sea port.   Worth reading about if a railway buff.   Chinese indebtedness is a curse in Africa.


I've been on the rail trip from Belgrade to Budapest a couple of times. It was horribly slow. i even was on a "sleeper" service.  What a waste of time. In the end it was faster to drive (about 4h) than suffer something like 7h in  a noisy and decrepit old train. A car goes door-to-door too.

I dunno, depends where one is going.


I travel on the UK Southern and Thameslink services further South from Gatwick quite regularly. 


It's fast and comfortable and doesn't take very long.  Moreover, it drops you right at the South Terminal if going to the airport.


I used to travel to the UK on Dutch railways from The Hague via Schipol Airport every week for over a year.  Brilliant it was. Myself and the other expats would play Bridge on the train and in the airport, gradually reducing in numbers while our flights were called.  It made it more fun.
