Inflation in Turkey in 2022

Hello everyone,

In the various media, inflation in Turkey is becoming increasingly important. This is becoming a concern for some, with fears of an impact on day-to-day budgeting.

Today, how does inflation in Turkey impact on daily life?

Which products and services have increased the most (insurance, shopping, petrol, electricity etc.)?

Have you had to review your budget? If so, what are your priorities?

What solutions have expatriates found to curb the impact of inflation? Did they use specific aids?

Thanks for your future contribution

Kind regards,

Inflation is indeed important and the TRY being relatively stable makes things not easier. Especially I think for real locals I think things are difficult.

The inflation you can see at the barber, restaurants, but also at normal shops.

We had enough funds and we are careful with electricity, still ....

Not too bothered at this stage, but there might be a time where we would....

Sad, really sad , lets see how things will go, but I am not very optimistic.

EUR is not going too well (in line with TRY)

But I can smoke, drink, eat, live, so that is fine

By taking 2 minimum wages (10500 TL)

House rent increasing from 5000 thousand TL to 13 000 TL in 1 year

Natural gas rising from 2300 TL to 5600 TL in 1 year

We continue to struggle with 1 plate of rice that goes from 10 TL to 50 - 60 - 70 TL...

@Phoenix24 Sad to hear that you have only 2 x minimum, I just assume you speak Turkish as well as English, should be much much more then minimum. English has quite some value I would think.

No doubt about it, those who have minimum jobs have a difficult situation.

Good luck, but you should get a better paying job.

@Mickael With regards to inflation, what is strange is that since December TRY did not really go down (against the EURO). So indeed things have become much, much more expensive, hairdresser, water, cigarettes, alcohol, bread, virtually everything.

We bought our property last September, so no real impact there really.

Also we have some savings so the higher prices do not really impact our day-to-day life, I can however imagine that for those living on a tight budget (locals and expats alike) it is a difficult situation.

Bottom line no fear as such, but we see things happening and not always good.

@Phoenix24 same problem  (familly here with a child) trying to actualy get a house and omg is soo hard, i dont understand why euro and dollar has so much impact in a non europeen country when few years agoo  noone of this happend , soo sad and scary :((

Dr Osman

The relationship between exchange rate and inflation is direct and certain. However, inflation lags the TRY depreciation. Most likely it will peak at about 150% by December (real one not reported) and slowly decline over time. However, do not expect anything to get cheaper. Prices will keep increasing albeit at a lower rate,
