Working remote in the dom rep by tcantey

I wanted to ask are there any precautions working a remote us job while in the Dominican Republic

@ExpatRusher Interesting question, one could say you’re stealing someone’s job but so would be cleaning your own house and garden. Unless you’re paying yourself a salary to do your own work it would come down to what the law says ... Read More

Sealing a roof against filtration by om2252001

Looking to get feedback on pricing. Internet gives costs from 300 to 600 pesos per square meter the higher price would include materials. I’m getting much higher quotes just for labor.

@om2252001 Seems realistic as we just got a quote that’s around 600 per square meter. That’s with liquid sealer which is not cheap. As there are critical procedures for a good result you need someone who does it right. We got this ... Read More

The day "ahorita" almost ruined my life (DR Spanish) by Ismael Mejia V

Told my landlord I'd be there "ahorita" to pay rent. In my head: 15 minutes. In Dominican: could be 20 minutes, could be Thursday. Showed up "ahorita" later and he looked at me like I'd personally betrayed him.Turns out "ahorita" in DR isn't a time, ...

Don’t worry, it’s not you. Any word that has time and fast as description is not comprehended by Dominicans themselves. Unless receiving money is involved. Most of these words are just a promise it will be sooner than a long time. Read More

Question about tipping by wondering9

I've been staying in a place that is also listed in Airbnb, but for the past ~4 months I've rented directly from the landlord (who is local and lives on the premises). I've done my own cleaning except for laundry, where the only option was to have ...

When 400 is paid to the landlord the cleaner might get only part of that in salary. So your 10% tip based on the total fee will be more than that to the cleaner. Read More

Can someone educate me of how much we can expect to pay a housekeeper per hour/day. i have gotten two quotes. first 1500/day for 3 hours. twice per week.  She said she wouldn't do windows. WHAT??  the second quote was for 18000 per month. ...

San Cristobal. Construction workers average 1200 a day at the sites. But it’s not a tourist/expat area and I usually keep my gringo face out of sight while my Dominican relatives do the negotiation or the price goes way up. It’s how it ... Read More

Of course they try. 1000 pesos for 3 hours is already good pay. And make sure they do the work how you want it. Unless you like buckets of water thrown in the house. Read More

Does anyone have experience getting their land/lot registered with an address? We purchased a plot of land in an industrial area that is all new construction. We are told the street has name, but we do not know what it is and it is not yet ...

Same as Unclebuck, I just dropped the pin and added all other company info. A normal search via a browser will also find it. Looking at the stats the majority of interactions is via mobile google maps anyway. Read More

Registering a vehicle in DR without residency. by Gcjackson2277

Hi folks, Hope everyone is well. I am in the process of building a villa in Sousa area. I visit a lot and would like to ship a car vs renting when I travel. Is it possible to register and insured a car without residency?

@Steverino7777 “Casa de conductor” is de clause that puts you in a ‘hotel’. Also many advice to install a dashcam in the car because no matter the accident you will likely get the blame unless you have some proof. Read More

Build a house (loan?) by MH3

Hey guys! Quick question about building a house. We own land, but the banks we’ve talked to don’t do mortgages for new construction like in the U.S. They say the only way is through a “builder,” where the house is already ...

Good advice is already mentioned. Even when possible, loans are very expensive in the DR, normal mortgages already have around 14% interest rate. You will also need onsite presence or, like they say, you will build two houses and one is yours. Read More

Best ant killer available in the DR? by wondering9

I'm suddenly getting a lot of ants, despite being pretty religious about not leaving food out & washing up right after eating. My landlady says they do this every fall and recommends something called Baygon. I looked it up and it looks pretty ...

Baygon is popular but pretty aggressive, Best when sprayed on (kills cockroaches in minutes) but is not lasting long. I wouldn’t use it up in a kitchen. Although it smells like perfume (why??) avoid any area for half an hour when it’s ... Read More
