New Delhi is the official national capital of India. It is also the second most populated city in the country. Spread over an area of 1,484 square kilometres, Delhi is home to some highly dynamic neighbourhoods. Good knowledge of these neighbourhoods will help you find the right accommodation that fits your needs. Here we present a brief overview of New Delhi's neighbourhoods.
Hauz Khas
Hauz Khas translates as the ‘royal water tank', a name pointing to the vast historical reservoir in the area. The tank has now been encircled by a paved walking track and is part of the Hauz Khas complex. Starting from the 1980s, the entire Hauz Khas village was redeveloped and turned into an upscale commercial and residential area. Currently, it is undoubtedly the hippest neighbourhood of New Delhi. The whole area is filled with great art galleries, chic boutiques, restaurants and bars.
Nizamuddin East
This wealthy residential neighbourhood houses many celebrities, politicians, artists and journalists. The area was originally built for refugees who fled from Pakistan during partition. But most owners have now sold their properties to wealthy buyers who have built high-class bungalows in the area. The neighbourhood is quite popular among expats as well. The historical Humayun's tomb here is worth a visit. There are many great bread and breakfast options for a shorter stay, as well.
Green Park
Green Park is another upscale locality in the South Delhi district. It is among the most affluent and posh neighbourhoods of New Delhi. The area has numerous well-kept gardens in each block. It also borders New Delhi's famous Deer Park, which is among the few large green spaces left in heavily urbanised Delhi. Many thus call Green Park the “lungs” of New Delhi. The area still offers many good restaurants and bars. It also has its own Metro station for easy connectivity.
South Ex
South Extension is a vast neighbourhood in South Delhi. Popularly known as South Ex, it is divided into two parts: South Extension - Part I and Part II. The area houses several big politicians. It is also one of Delhi's most upscale markets catering to the rich and elite. There are high-end jewellers and fashion brands to explore. It is also home to many famous pubs and restaurants. There are leading gymnasium chains in the area as well. In short, South Ex offers a comfortable and lavish lifestyle to its residents.
Connaught Place
Connaught Place layout consists of three rings—inner, middle and outer— each containing white Georgian-style buildings. A big park is located at the centre of these rings. Popularly known as CP, the area lies at the heart of the city with radial roads branching out in all directions. One of such lanes is Janpath, which is a great market lane and houses one of India's first underground markets called Palika Bazaar. You will find good deals at an unbelievably cheap rate here. Connaught Place today is one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in the city. It hosts numerous great bars and restaurants, most of which lie at the outer circle. It is also known for its swinging nightlife and attracts party people from all around Delhi. Plus, it has its own large metro station Rajiv Chowk for easy connectivity with the entire city.
