New Delhi offers many world-class higher study options. The city boasts of some of the leading engineering and medical institutes of India. There are highly renowned universities in the city that offer a variety of courses to students from all around the world.

The higher education system of India

All the higher education courses in India are English-based. Education is mainly provided by public and privately funded universities. Further, public universities are either centrally or state-run. Currently, there are about 500,000 students in Delhi NCR attending a variety of courses in over 165 universities. The undergraduate courses in India are 3-years long, except professional courses like engineering which are 4-years. The postgraduate courses are 2-years in length. Further, a student can opt for a PhD which requires an additional three years.

Currently, New Delhi has 5 central universities, 7 state universities and 13 highly deemed universities. Delhi is also home to one international university established by the eight-member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Besides this, there are many privately run universities and local colleges.

Entry requirements for New Delhi universities

You must comply with a series of admission requirements for each institute. These requirements vary slightly depending on the university, but one standard rule applies: You must hold a senior higher school passing certificate. Generally, study semester in Delhi universities starts from July or August, so you must start the application process well in advance.

Applying to a university in New Delhi

Start by doing thorough research of all the institutes in Delhi and the various courses they offer. Look at their eligibility criteria, fees structure and hostel options. Once you have decided on the institute of your choice, it's time to start the admission process. For this, you will have to send your application form directly to the selected institute of your choice. In addition to a duly filled application form, you must attach the following documents:

  • your secondary studies result slips, as well as your higher school certificate;
  • result slips in the case of any first diploma or degree if you are enrolling for a Masters;
  • a cover letter indicating why you have chosen the university and a specific study program; and
  • your resume (written in English and detailing your academic and professional skills).

International students can enrol directly through the Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA) website, which has been specially designed by the Indian government. This website also allows you to enrol for an Undergraduate program regulated by the National Institute of Technology and other organisations.

Indian Institute Of Technology(IIT), Delhi

IIT Delhi is a public engineering institute located in Hauz Khas, New Delhi. It is one of the most premier education universities in India. In 2018, IIT Delhi was declared as an Institute of Eminence (IoE), which granted it more autonomy and eligibility to admit up to 30% international students. Spreading over an area of 325 acres, the huge college campus provides a comfortable student life. All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), Delhi

AIIMS is a prestigious medical college and research university in New Delhi. It is often ranked first among medical colleges in India. Since it has very few admission seats, it is a challenging task to get an admission here. Five seats are reserved for the foreign nationals nominated by the Government of India. Applications can be sent to the assigned Government offices to be considered for nomination. For eligibility, those who are nominated must have at least 50% marks in the aggregate of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects in their Intermediate or equivalent examination.

University of Delhi

Popularly known as DU, University of Delhi is one of the largest universities in India. It is a central public university consisting of a long list of academic departments and affiliated colleges. Currently, DU has 86 departments spread over its North and South campuses and 77 affiliated colleges. From professional engineering courses to Humanities and fine arts, the institute offers a variety of study programmes. Foreign nationals can register through Foreign Students Registry (FSR), which a single window for registration in different study programmes conducted in various departments and affiliated colleges of Delhi University.
