The small, prosperous republic of Mauritius has risen to become one of the most progressive economies in Africa. Its strategic location in the heart of the Indian Ocean makes it a prime destination for work and investment. Here's everything you need to know if you want to find or have found a job in Mauritius.

The Mauritian job market

The Mauritian economy still relies heavily on the services sector, but recent trends are shifting the job market toward high-tech, value-driven industries. In 2026, the most promising sectors are expected to include information technology (AI, cybersecurity, fintech), renewable energy, digital health, financial and insurance technology, digital marketing and e-commerce, as well as smart logistics.

For foreign professionals, the conditions for obtaining a work or Occupation Permit have been updated: a monthly salary of around Rs 30,000 is generally required for a Professional Permit. At the same time, the Young Professional Permit typically demands a minimum of Rs 25,000. In certain IT or highly specialized technology sectors, higher thresholds may apply.

Working in Mauritius, therefore, requires offering rare and high-level expertise that justifies a competitive salary while complying with the country's current legal and regulatory standards.

Good to know:

As of 1 January 2026, the national minimum wage increased from Rs 17,110 to Rs 17,745 per month, following the addition of the annual salary compensation of Rs 635 to the 2025 rate. Employees earning up to Rs 50,000 per month benefit from this annual wage adjustment, which is applied each January.

Requirements to hire expats in Mauritius

Many Mauritian companies hire expats to work in Mauritius, provided they comply with the provisions of the Non-Citizens (Employment restriction) Act. They must therefore ensure that their foreign employees have a valid Residence or Occupation Permit under the “Professional” category to work and live in Mauritius. If this is not the case, the company will have to apply on behalf of the employee.

The Occupation Permit “Professional” (employee)

The Occupation Permit allows a foreign professional to work for a company incorporated in Mauritius. The company must meet the following conditions:

  • Pay a basic salary of at least Rs 30,000;

  • Handle the Occupation Permit “Professional” application on behalf of the employee.

Work Permit for labor and non-labor jobs

Expats must contact the right person, depending on their job category. For blue-collar jobs, the work permit is issued by the Ministry of Labour, and Industrial Relations. Others are subject to an Occupation Permit, which is processed by the Economic Development Board.
