Good Day Julien: Im very Interested in moving to Uruguay. I am a Diabetic and need to check the prices of my medications in Uruguay near a beach town. I am very healthy but need to check the costs because most Diabetics cannot get insurance from BuPa or the country hospitals that offer prepaid health care. Can you help me or put me in touch with a English speaking Pharmacy.

you can't get rid of diabetes..you can sometimes manage without meds though if lucky.

This is a concern for my husband who has heart issues too and is on a fair bit of medication...was curious about how accessible they would be there.

Can anyone tell me in more detail about the health check involved in obtaining residency in Uruguay?

There are diabetics among our number, too. If they simply don't let diabetics become residents, that would be important for us to know! But we'd also like to know what else the health check entails. Is it just contagious diseases, or all kinds of conditions?

My curiosity - I understand that Uruguay is a common retirement destination. How can this be if you have to be in really wonderful health?

My health check for residency consisted of a look in my mouth, giving some blood ( overnight fasting beforehand) and urine and answering a few questions such as do you drink, do you smoke etc. The doctor also took my blood pressure and I needed to provide evidence of a tetanus vaccination.
Women under I think it was 59 have to provide recent Pap test and mammogram and women over- I think 60 or so just the Pap test.

I do not think they wish to exclude you if you have a chronic condition but to advise you if you have something you don't know about.
