Interested in moving to Monteverde

Amanda Espinosa

Hello everyone!

I currently live in NY and have been researching emigrating to Uruguay. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and will be securing fully remote work before I move. Where might I start to look for a one bedroom apt for me and my pup? I'm think Zillow, Apartments.com, etc are pretty limited and I haven't found much on sites like Properstar for less than I'm paying now ($1,200 for 900 sq feet).

You can try Locanto for Uruguay:

https://www.locanto.com.uy/

It's a site sort of like Craigslist.  Owners as well as agencies can place free ads.  Look under Inmobiliaria for houses and apartments for rent and sale, and rooms for rent.

I suspect though that like many South American countries you will find many properties by walking around and looking for signs in the windows with a phone number, Se Alquila or En Arriendo, or En Venta etc.  It is also common to ask security personnel in gated communities or buildings that interest you, to be on the lookout for rental or sale properties, and to offer some money if you rent/buy a unit in the community.

Personally I would always go for an apartamento con terraza especially with a pup!  Good Luck!

First thing is you won’t find anything for Monteverde so try Montevideo.  But there are lots of other places to go to live.

Always check Mercado Libre too, lots of real estate on that site

Do know that for rentals if you aren’t working for an Uruguayan company with access to rental coverage insurance you may have to put up 5 months rent in a deposit. Your rental apartment most likely will not include any utilities and may not have a Fridge or stove or even a hot water heater. The tenant pays most of the buildings charges not your landlord as most are owned by individuals who are renting to you, not a big company that owns the building!
