Navigating friendships as an expat in Ecuador

Hello everyone,

Moving to Ecuador reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Ecuador? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Ecuador, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel “out of sync” with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Ecuador? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl! I am not yet in Ecuador (I arrive next month) but I am curious about the same questions. I lived in Thailand for years, and I reflected on a lot of your questions through that lens, as the challenges are similar no matter where you've moved. I was teaching at a school there so made friends and contacts through my work. I won't have that same situation in Ecuador, though. I find that traveling solo, you are more inclined to approach others and they are more inclined to approach you, which helps. I've also been looking into language classes, meditations to join, and hiking groups as avenues to meet people. The transient nature of people in expat circles and traveler circles is challenging when people decide to move on...and suddenly you're best friends with someone on the other side of the world. But it can also encourage easier connections than when you're in the comfort of your home town, staying in your bubble. I'm glad to have had so many circles of friends, even if they winds eventually blew us in different directions. They feel so meaningful and treasured. Where are you located?

Hello civersen17,

Welcome to Expat.com 😀

Thank you for sharing your experience. I love your perspective on making connections while living abroad, even if some friendships are only for a chapter of our lives.

Wishing you a smooth move to Ecuador next month! Have you already decided which city you will be settling in?

Cheers,

Cheryl
