How to adapt to the expat challenges of everyday life in Colombia

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Adapting to everyday life as an expat in Colombia can be both exciting and overwhelming: different habits, systems, and sometimes even unexpected surprises! Simple things like paying bills, using public transport, or even greeting neighbors might work differently than what you're used to.

We would like to invite you to share the biggest challenges you face in your daily routine. Here are a few questions to start with:

What aspects of daily life were the most challenging for you at first?

How did you overcome these difficulties?

Did you find any local habits or customs particularly surprising?

What has helped you in feeling more at ease in your new environment?

Any funny or unexpected experiences you would like to share?

Share your experiences, anecdotes and tips to help fellow expats.

Thank you for your contribution.

I was informally adopted by a nice Colombian lady and family. We all help each other. My knowledge of Spanish  is on a professional level. I am 76 and retired; don't need to work. This arrangement works for me!

This is my first post since January (2025).  I believe I was

blocked by a security measure on the site, which type of

requirement also caused the loss of access to my

longtime yahoo email.  I am now using a new gmail

account.  I today just learned that I apparently have

renewed access to post on the forums.

Here in northern Colombia, I have been learning first-hand

how the challenges of being an Expat in South America

are at least doubled if one develops a serious chronic illness.

After three months in a hospital, I am back at

hotel Dann Carlton and have a part-time nurse while

continuing chemo care as an outpatient.  Due to the

strong effects of treatment including fatigue and

occasional insomnia nights, nurse Laura assists me

with my medications and food needs. The hotel has

room service as well as a swimming pool, both of

which I have been using.

Dang. I hope the treatments help you out, buddy. Are you at least keeping your mind engaged with hobbies and such?

I am using YouTube.com a lot .. and have DAZN (The Zone] access to every

NFL game.  I have an ongoing conversation with my sister in Oregon

via email and the same with a platonic friend of many years.  She is

in Queens, NY.
