Happy Earth Day 2026

mberigan

Just to say Happy Earth Day with the hopes that each and every one of us spend a little time passing along the importance of helping out our planet by being good ambassadors of nature to those around us.

I'm very encouraged today in watching (distance-participation) an Instagram group in João Pessoa called movimentoesgotei as they tackle huge issues around sewage and other urban infrastructure issues that arise due to sudden growth. I've tried the same in my Brazilian community over the last 17 years with less luck but being from Madison Wisconsin, where I like to say that Earth Day was born (1970), I'm persistent in being involved as a citizen environmentalist.

Just as Rachel Carson wrote the defining book, "Silent Spring," (1962) about the complications of chemicals entering our ecological services, there's a Brazilian author who follows that path regarding the significant dangers of excessive agrotoxin use in Brazil. Her name is Larissa Mies Bombardi. Her more recent books are in French or Portuguese but other works are available in English.

Happy Earth Day!
