Accommodation and transport in Christchurch

I secured employment in Christchurch from 3 August 2015.

My wife and I need accommodation for about 6 - 9 months. What is the best way to source and secure a rental apartment/ house (preferably furnished)?

How easy is it to do everything from South Africa before I leave?

Also, is it reasonably easy to find a 'not too expensive' car to get around in immediately?

We have been to Christchurch and love it there.

I will appreciate any assistance.

I think Trademe can't be set-up from outside New Zealand and Australia, you would require a local landline and mobile no... have a look in trademe in the description as some posters provide their e-mail ids.

Another site to look at is nzflatmates.co.nz / easy room mate.

Also look at www.realestate.co.nz. They usually have rental listings
