Foreign driving licence in North Carolina

Florent Fayolle

Hi everybody,

I will be going to Raleigh, North Carolina, for 3 months in September 2023 and will need to use a car for travelling during my research placement.

Question - are EU driving licences (French in my case) recognised in NC for short stays only (less than 90 days)? Do they automatically need to be accompanied by an international permit as well?

I am asking this because I have encountered contradicting information during my search online. I have also contacted the NC DMV, but they did not provide a clear answer.

Thanks for clarifying the above.

Best,

Florent Fayolle

The IDP is not recognized in NC, but yes you can drive with a EU license, it's not a problem.
