Sense of humour in Mexico

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore Mexican’s culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in Mexico?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in Mexico and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in Mexico?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

The funniest one I heard was "there were these two gringos...." maybe not.

Like most things, humor depends on your ability to communicate. Mexico is a fairly laid back country. They get to know you, and you might become part of their sense of humor. They tend to tease and laugh a lot about things the U.S. may not. If you fall down and don't get hurt that may be an occasion to joke and laugh.

I have looked at some of the stand-up and often the jokes are based on local culture, and native understanding
. I am not part of the local history so often I don't get what is so funny. It's like a stand up in NY or Dallas Texas.  I wouldn't get their inside jokes either.

As for popular comedians, Netflix has many of them, Some of them are flexible enough to be understood by nonnatives who speak Spanish.  The best have adapted their show to a more global perspective.

I have grown up among mexicans all my life having lived in California. I find the humor similar to England's Benny Hill...lol...lots of it physical and sexual. As in most things comical, anything more than that can quickly get lost in translation so the more you know slang the better you will understand the comedy. Saying that, my favorite novela was La Fea Más Bella so there ya go!
