"SCIENCE IS GOLDEN"

Phil James is a Sydney based Artist. In recent years he has become known for utilising public spaces to showcase his work. In late 2009 his work was discovered in an alleyway by the Ray Hughes Gallery, and a solo show (Philjames and Shunga Woodcuts) followed in early 2010; a show which positioned his somewhat erotic based manga influenced stencilled paintings opposite the antique erotic woodcuts (Shunga) of Japanese masters.
He has been a finalist in the inauguural Art and About- The City as a Canvas, A city wide celebration of art exhibited on the streets of Sydney; A two time finalist in the National Brett Whiteley Travelling Art scholarship; The nationwide Dobell Drawing Prize, held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales; The Blake Prize for Religious Art, and most recently was one of seven artists invited to participate in Imagine Australia. A government sponsored intitiative to celebrate the Year of Australian Culture in China. This included a month of intensive travel throughout China culminating in a month long Studio residency in Beijing and a group exhibition- "Hard Sleeper"- at the Red Gate Gallery (Beijing).
His work is held in numerous collections both domestically and internationally.
