Your home/car insurance can be packaged. While you're waiting for your PR, you can get medical insurance in the interim.

Critical Illness, life insurance, disability and long-term care are available...property insurance would be purchased separately, but can be bundled with car insurance.

"Is it better to purchase insurance from an expat insurance specialist or from a local insurance provider?"
It's best to meet with a Financial Consultant so you can go through your budget and Insurance Needs Analysis. Also, it is best to select insurance from a reputable company like Canada Life, Manulife, Sunlife, etc.

"And what about insurance costs?"
Insurance Costs will depend on your age and insurability, but I always give clients cost comparisons from different companies and point out the advantages between companies.
