I am Julien and with my family (wife and our daughter) we came to Istanbul in August. We are both working remotely from Sariyer neighboorhood. We will be using expat.com for getting some advice on the daily life here as well as residence permit.

Hi all my name is len from South Africa. I'm a qualified facility manager with qualifications in safety security, building inspector. I have been scammed by a company in Ankara out of 11000 USD.

Can any one give me advise on reporting the matter ?

I'm 43year old , an facility manager with civil construction education. I'm also a trained qualified safety officer. My last employment was operational Complience risk manager for a hotel group.

I was offered employment which I have paid 11000 USD and been scammed out of my paperwork. I'm not sure if the company is real or not.. they demanded another 6250 USD for visa application.

I have to go back to rsa without employment.

DiD you try the forums. On Google search? There are some good tips how to recoup your lost!

Don't pay any more money. They found a cash cow..They will ask for more and more..

Yes, they now demand another 6250 usd before I could have my ikamet. It's sad that there is people out there in the world doing this things. I'm really sad. I just thought maybe someone in Ankara knows such a way to report them.

If you sent the money. There would be 2 situations.. They ask for more. Or they pretend to help you. But tell them if they are true to their words. They give you what they promise! But don't send any more money. Just wait and see

I just want to ask how is the atmosphere in Bodrum ? As I understood you live there. There were tourists this summer, it returns to normal, or the situation is still difficult ? I'm thinking of a relocation in the future and I still don't know what to choose between Kuşadası, Bodrum and Marmaris ? I would like a city where there is life in the winter time, not a dead city in the off-season ? I was in Tuscany for years in the summer and everything was full of life. I was surprised to see the same places in November / December, ghosty cities with few locals and retirees ... You understand what I mean. Thank you for an eventual answer.

Hospitals are everywhere in Turkey, and the Aegean and Southern coasts are wonderful. However, it is good to choose a place where there are bigger hospitals, that offer a wider range of services. If you need a specialist, to not fly half of the country for an intervention. In addition keep in mind the humidity in the south (if you enjoy it is ok). On the west coast is not so humid. And of course the number of foreigners installed in the area. It is always good to have more people from your culture arund.

Hello Pariste....I actually live in a village near Tire, Izmir.....(not Bodrum), although I have visited Bodrum twice in the last 3 months. I cannot tell you about Bodrum in the winter. But I would certainly recommend Kusadasi the nearest holiday resort to me. Sorry to ask but what nationality are you? I wanted to tell you whether you'll have possible friends there. Kusadasi is a smallish town but there's a lot going on in summer and winter. Bodrum is more crowded and bustling in summer. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions.

Pariste I see you are French. (I should have realised from your name). Not sure if there is a big French community in Kusadasi. But there is a big British community and I am sure you would fit in. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum. I think expat just means someone living in a different country. But you'll find lots of help and advice here.

Hi Len, where are you based....? I'm sure you'll find someone to teach you Turkish...but you might be better off going for a proper teacher rather than a "language exchange" deal....because teaching is actually a skill....and I suspect someone whose English is poor is not going to be able to easily communicate the lessons. I know this in reverse because I teach a few private students English but also speak enough Turkish to avoid total chaos.....in the meantime you might want to have a look at turkishteatime.com....  it's a brilliant podcast-based language learning site ...you have to pay for the full access (not expensive) which includes dialogues, quizzes and much more....but you can get the podcasts for free if you search around the internet. The American who devised it has disappeared but it has more than 130 lessons and is really good. Best of luck.

I would say very difficult unless you have a Turkish sponsor. The unemployment rate in Turkey is nearing 30% so a lot of Turks have no jobs. However, if you have a specialty it may be possible...BUT you need a special permit and that's where the employer/sponsor comes in. They normally arrange a permit for you. I personally don't know any Turkish employers. Good luck.

Really excited to be here and see what this forum has to offer. Planning a move with family ( 2 school going kids) and needless to say got a lot of questions regarding the move, the schools, accommodation and ofcourse the covid situation and experience of ppl living there rather than hearing and believing what media says.
