Looking to connect with an American parent living in Istanbul

Hi everyone!

My husband is Turkish, I’m American, and we are considering moving to Istanbul with our young son. We are particularly interested in living on the Asian side, possibly in Ataşehir to be close to my in-laws.

I would really love to connect with an American who has made a similar move, ideally someone who is currently living in Istanbul and has children.

I’m less interested in general information about Istanbul and more interested in hearing about the personal experience of transitioning from life in the U.S. to life in Istanbul with a family.

I’d especially love to hear about:

* What was the adjustment to everyday life actually like?

* What was the hardest part of moving there?

* Did you struggle with the language barrier?

* How did you make friends and build a social circle?

* Was it easy to meet other American/English-speaking parents?

* What is it like raising children in Istanbul compared with the U.S.?

* How did you find childcare, doctors, activities, etc.?

* What do you love most about living there?

* What do you miss most about the U.S.?

* Were there any things about living in Turkey that surprised you?

* If you could do the move over again, would you?

* And, most importantly, did you eventually feel like Istanbul was home?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from someone who can give an honest perspective on both the positives and the challenges. We’ve visited Istanbul and love it, but I know that visiting somewhere is very different from actually living there, especially with a young child.
