Moving across continents is a huge step, but having family support in Istanbul will make a world of difference. Here are a few thoughts from experience that might help put your mind at ease:

1. Cultural Adaptation & Socializing

The Warmth & Community: Turkish culture is incredibly hospitable, family-oriented, and welcoming. While the pace of a massive metropolis like Istanbul will feel very different from North Carolina, locals are generally very helpful to expats.

Finding Your Circle: Istanbul has a vibrant expat community. Joining groups like InterNations, local Facebook/Meetup expat groups, or mother-and-child communities (like Moms in Istanbul) will help you build your own social network alongside your husband’s family.

Language: Learning even basic conversational Turkish early on will boost your confidence tremendously and help you feel integrated much faster.

2. Quality of Life for Your 1-Year-Old

Kid-Friendly Culture: Turkey is exceptionally warm and forgiving toward young children. Kids are welcomed everywhere, from restaurants to public parks.

Parks & Neighborhood Choice: Quality of life in Istanbul heavily depends on the neighborhood you choose. Areas like Kadıköy/Moda, Suadiye on the Asian side, or Göktürk, Bebek, and Zekeriyaköy on the European side offer great green spaces, walkable streets, and excellent preschools.

Healthcare & Education: Istanbul offers world-class private healthcare and high-standard international/bilingual preschools and schools.

It will certainly be an adjustment period—give yourself grace and time to adapt to the new rhythm of the city. Having your husband’s family around to help with your little one will be a huge advantage!

Thank you so much! Do you think the Bati Ataşehir area would be close to the same vibe as Kadıköy? I've read that Kadıköy is great for families.
