It's a nightmare for single women (I just leave the country for holidays--far easier lol).  For a guy, much easier.  There are buses for long distances and a train runs between Riyadh and Dammam.  You might also consider renting a car.

To major cities, it's safe (safest being flying) but a royal P-I-T-A  since you can't be sure you'll even get out of the airport without a mahram
