Dealing with loneliness in Oman

It’s a very relevant and pertinent topic to raise for discussion.

Me being a PSYCHIATRIST couldn’t resist the temptation of sharing my personal as well professional views......

Problem statements;

1. Loneliness is like a necessary Evil for Expatriates.
2. Creating Social Circle will depend on yr personal and Cultural norms so it’s definitely not applicable for everyone
3. Working hours especially if u r in “Split-shifts” makes social activities further difficult and tiring if age is not on yr side.

So what to do if Tide is against u;

1.Explore Self; since u r financially somewhat relax, take a journey in yr past......look back at things which u always wanted to do if u have money with u.........re-explore  yr hobbies, suppressed interest areas, music, reading, painting etc

2. Can u work for yr Career growth?????
Start  exploring the growth options available for yr career/employment......some degrees, online or direct weekend courses, exams etc.......it will be difficult to start with; think about the dividends but Believe me u can do it

3. God does exist.......
Not a religious sermon but A PSYCHIATRIST’S ACCEPTANCE......we need to believe in some Super Power to COPE with our difficult times; in childhood this belief was vested in our parents then some rich friends and so on........So now it’s time to re-establish yr belief in The God, dress well, feel good.....go to temple, church, mosque.....pray and make friends also and on lighter note don’t forget to take the PRASADAM........

Ya .its serious issue specially in this country..Myself also faced the same problem in the early days when i moved here from a crowded country India. To overcome this I have joined groups and from their I made a friend circle of expats.We all generally meet whenever all of us get time out of our work schedule. Now its almost 10 months and I am easily going along with my new friends and enjoying free time.

Loneliness is having very bad impact on personal personality as well overall life.

I have been gone through it few years in Oman and had very bad experience.

I suffering from internet and try to find good person for friendship but most of the people are on social network are fake and c**** but finally from last year got some good friends due to that i got mentally relaxation.

Oman transportation has not developed yet you cannot go out easily to shopping malls and gathering places to just spend sometimes however you go anywhere you need a friend to talk.

Many people are facing this issue, only advise to search good friends i felt lucky i have few friends which are very good.

To kill loneliness in Oman points

get a license asap or else you are gone
go to muttrah market to buy fishes or fruits and veggies
learn to cook it’s the best past time in the world
find a garden and go for a walk or exercise
go to cornice and spend sometime
make new friends
join sports at a club e.g. indian school of muscat
make friends
go to surr near wadi bani khalid
go to quriyat dam
go to ocec and watch world cup matches for 2 riyals
go to qurum beach and chill out
gonto intercontinental or grand hyatt if you want to party not advisable

It was actually my major problem during my early years of stay here in Oman. I would buy books to read and watch movies everyday during my leisure time just to make myself busy because once I have nothing to do I can't help of thinking negative things. There was a time that it became worse, I started feeling like my life doesn't have a purpose, like its going nowhere with me stuck with work and with my everyday life a routine of sleeping, eating, working and back to sleeping. I felt so alone and that's when I started having panic attacks. I would talk to my mom and my sisters back to my country and tell them how I'm doing and how I'm feeling and they would start worrying about me and tell me to refrain from thinking negative things, go to the mall, buy yourself something, pamper yourself and that's what I did. I started jogging and it helped a lot. Whenever I feel heavy inside, jogging is my remedy. Its like I'm sweating my worries, bad vibes and anything that makes me feel bad away. It always makes my head clear and gets me back to track.

By Forming a friends circle around you, Its very happy to live here..

When you first land in new country as expat, its really very painful, but for myself its always painful when i go back for some short vacations and come back. It is also very difficult to adjust when the major language of local community is different from you. But anyhow slowly and gradually we busy ourselves completely in work. That why I always feel that I work more when i am working as an expat than back in my home country.

Oman is a beautiful country and there is lot to see and experience, but the real challenge is to find like minded people around you. Once you find such community , the loneliness cannot bother you anymore.

Loneliness is killing me 😭it's so difficult to find a opposite sex friend to stick around always spend your free time together with......all I know is people are fake all over .
