Using a car in Spain

edwilofyork

Hi everyone,

I am hoping to buy a car in Spain and leave it at the airport to use on each visit. Would I need a local bank account to have a standing order for insurance, road tax etc.?My spanish is poor so would I be advised to leave it in the hands of an agent of some type? Thanks.

Welcome to the expat.com forum and good luck with your move to Spain!

This sounds like a right headache, and probably a bit expensive (airport parking and your other car bills). And who will help you get your car started if the battery's flat? :-)

Depending on frequency and length of your visits, it's a lot less hassle to rent a car at the airport. Or, you might drive over instead of flying (long drive, but then you have your own vehicle at all times). Or, you keep a local registered vehicle in your garage at home, and just figure out a cost-effective way (bus, train, taxi) to get to/from the airport. I've personally tried all these options. I've also left my car at airport parking, but never for more than a week or two.

I'm thinking along the car hire line too but so many of them have lousy reviews that I'm a bit put-off.
