Coping with loss in Spain

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Managing or preparing for a death in Spain is a complex process that requires a thorough understanding of the laws and procedures in place in Spain.

This situation raises several questions:

What are the steps to take to retrieve the belongings of a deceased loved one in Spain?

What are the resources or specialised institutions available to assist in this process? What types of services can they offer in this context?

In the case of a will, how can one ensure that it is recognised and respected in Spain? What challenges arise from differences in legislation?

Who should be informed first of the death of a loved one in Spain? What are the most effective communication channels for notifying relatives and institutions?

What are the implications for dependent visas, such as those for spouses and children, when the visa holder passes away in Spain? What steps need to be taken to address this situation?

Please feel free to share any information you find useful and your experiences on this topic.

Thank you for your contribution.

A couple of months ago a friend,  resident in Ireland, died whilst on holiday in spain.   i was asked to arranged the funeral. He had a spanish Will covering his spanish assets which he had left to his wife.  An apartment, bank account and a car.

I called several funeral directors around Fuengirola for a quote.  All spoke English.

The one i accepted was 1,700€.  it includes all the notifications, and paperwork, the cremation, a church service.   All was very straightforward.

We instructed a gestor.   She had completed everything, transfer of assets, legal paperwork, etc.  It took 10 weeks.  The cost was 3,300€ which included everything.
