As a general note to all, the UK is very restrictive on work visas for non-EU citizens, to the extent that it has a "Shortage Occupation List" and then on top of that uses regional quotas for those who actually qualify from that list, so even if you find a job and an employer who will employ you, if the quota for the period has been used, you will not get a work visa.

In addition, Work Visas are by definition temporary and should not be regarded as a way to guarantee permanent residence anywhere in the UK. They do give you the ability to request permanent residence, but there is no guarantee it will be granted and you may have to return to your home country at the end of your visa.

That is also a fact, the last best guess is that there all almost 1 million illegal residents in the UK.

how do Commonwealth countries manage. do people from Canada experience the same restriction (after COVID of course)

There are some provisions made for Commonwealth citizens; there is a section of the UK Gov website dedicated to this; this link will take you straight there.

So, I'm not an engineer, per se, but my job falls under engineering in my company (and under quality in some other companies). Does anyone know if configuration analysts or configuration specialists qualify for engineering jobs?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The system has moved on since the post you read; the current UK visa system. The Tier 2 (General work visa) has been replaced by what is today known as the "Skilled Worker visa"; this link will take you straight to the current rules on the UK Gov website. My advice is to read through it and the links it provides. It contains much of the old scheme, but they have introduced occupation codes to determine what profession is and isn't required and your application must be sponsored by your future employer.
