Pets in Romania

I came with my dog from Germany. All pets travelling in EU and also outside need to have a microchip. I am not sure if you are obliged to have vaccinations, but I highly recommend it. In Romania are many many stray dogs and also dogs at home which are not vaccinated and diseases like Parvovirose and Distemper are daily battle for them. Do yourself and your pet a good thing and vaccinate (costs between 15 and 35 Euro, depends where you are). I think a dog is obliged to have a microchip in Romania (although I don't know who controls it). There are in some regions dog catchers which bring the dogs to "shelters" and kill them after 2 or 3 weeks if no owner shows up. In this case it is easier to get your friend back when he has a chip.

I also highly recommend regular treatments against parasites, internal and external. My dog was infected by a tick with Anaplasmose which destroys the blood and will lead to a bad end. The only way to protect your dog from that is to give treatments on the skin every couple of weeks to keep away ticks and other stuff. Do it.

To adopt a dog I understood that you have to do the same things as in other EU countries: vaccinate and microchip (and in your own interest internal and external antiparasit treatment). Usually a modern vet clinic should be able to help you with it.

Dogs are not usually welcome, but there are also many dog haters who don't like them at all. Keep your dog on a lead, make him behave well and you will have many new friends, especially kids. Once the people understood your dog is friendly and does not bite they will adore him. In hotels or pensions it is like in every other country - sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Pet hotels are rare, there are some in Bucharest.
