Family relocating in Porto

Hello,

I currently live in Cape Town, South Africa, since 9 years.
I am married and have 3 children.
We are moving to Porto in September 2018, it's a personal choice, to explore another part of the world, learn a new language, another culture.
I have been to Porto for 2 days only so I know very little of this city.
My husband is going there early december.
My question is : what part of Porto would you recommend to live with children? They will go to the Lycee Français but We are ready to see neighbourhood near the see or Matoshinos,... any suggestion is welcome!
We want to rent a house or an apartment.
My second question is : what agency is specialized in renting houses? someone suggested ERA?

Hi Marie

My wife, two children and I are also relocating from Cape Town to Porto in August 2018. We have just returned from a two week house shopping expedition and we had the honour of dealing with Era while we were there.

We dealt with Rita because she speaks fluent English. Here are her details :-

She does not work directly in the domestic market (shes a Commercial property specialist) but she'll be able to help you.

PS, we bought a house in Foz Do Doura and got both children in CLIP School. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

could you please advise what area , or city is suitable for family, kids education and schooling?

we also like to know the cost of living in terms of rent (or buying an apartment) and roughly monthly shopping costs for a family of 4?

Lastly, how the health insurance look like if a family member get ill?

Private school or public school?

Cost of living is highest in Lisbon and Porto, due to tight rental markets as the inventory is being eaten by tourism. See Numbeo.com for cost of living indices (user-contributed data).

Health insurance must be private insurance to receive a residency visa, unless the income-earner is paying into Portuguese Social Security through local employment or voluntarily (indexed to foreign income if that is the source). Social Security payments via the employer cover a variety of social benefits (not just health care) and is at a rate of about 33% of income with some variance, two-thirds of which is paid by employee and the rest deducted from the employee. You'll need to search worldwide insurance providers for coverage in Portugal to satisfy visa requirements.

Note that Social Security deductions are SEPARATE from income tax and include healthcare, unlike in Canada where the provinces manage healthcare and the federal government manages social benefits like unemployment insurance.
