Pre-Brexit British Residents - Update on applying for PR

A while ago, I mentioned my ignorance as to whether there was a special regime for pre-Brexit British residents. This post is to provide an update on the process.

Having gone to the AIMA website and having chosen the BREXIT subject and the request for permanent residence, I received an email around 2-3 months later, with an appointment date and time and we went to AIMA today. The only documents they wanted were: passport, current residence card, proof of tax returns, proof of social security number, utente number, and proof of address.

Contrary to AI’s advice, AIMA did NOT ask for proof of income or savings,  proof that we had not spent extensive time outside Portugal, police clearance, proof of A2 level Portuguese proficiency.

So, our permanent residence cards will be mailed to us within 90 days (they returned our current cards in case we want to travel).

Also worth knowing is that they scan the original documents into the computer, so don’t bother making a bunch of copies (as I did).

Although there was the usual interminable clicking around on the computer (goes with any bureaucratic process), the process was relatively slick.

Hope this is helpful to the pre-Brexit UK residents.

@Wibble2024,

Thank you for clarifying that. The AIMA website isn’t very clear on the process of switching from temporary to permanent residence.
