NHR -staying with a friend ok instead of a rental?

Heidiho50

Hello-

I obtained NHR status in december 2023.

I have a rental contract in Lisbon starting 1/1/24 for 1 year, which was submitted in Dec when applying as proof of address.

I can now stay with a friend and her family in Cascais ( or free) and as such no longer need to pay rent.

My landlord is willing to let me out of the contract with immediate effect ( he has an offer for higher rent)

  1. Wil this endanger my NHR status if I submit a letter from my friend offering me to stay?
  2. How do I go about announcing this change and to which ordinance?
  3. Will this in any way en change of address with no rental agreement danger my NHR status?

Grateful for advise on this!

Thank you

Heidi

NHR is a tax status, not dependent in any way on your accommodation arrangements. On that front, you merely need to keep the tax office informed of any change of address, which you should do within 60 days.

Proof that you have accommodation at your disposal is required for immigration purposes but whether / who you need to inform, and when, depends on your type of residence document, assuming you're required to hold one.

Hi Heidi, Welcome.

As already mentioned, the NHR is a tax regime. You can change your tax address with AT Finanças, as long as you fulfil the conditions (*) to be NHR in Portugal:
