Information for getting married in norway

I can't see there is a problem marrying in Norway if you are not seeking residence. Try to contact the Norwegian state church.

Hello Arnold, getting married should be easy in terms of complying with submission of the proper documentation to skatteetaten. For an American citizen (who have no permanent residence in Norway)
you must submit the following:

1. Declaration by the parties to the marriage prior to verification of compliance with the conditions for marriage (one for you and your Norwegian fiancee) FORM Q-0150E

2. Statement by the sponsor or FORLOVER - This must be filled out by a friend/colleague or whoever knows YOU.  And a separate one for your fiancee who knows her.    FORM Q-0151E

3. Declaration of change - Section 8 of the Marriage Act or Erklæring om skifte - ekteskapsloven § 8 -
In the case of people who are divorced according to foreign law, the divorce must be recognised by the county governor.  FORM Q-0160B

4. As per U.S. embassy notes:
"Norwegian authorities will normally require U.S. citizens getting married in Norway to present a marriage affidavit.

A marriage affidavit is issued at the Embassy. It is your own sworn statement that you are eligible to be married. You must be present at the Embassy to sign in front of the notary and you need to book an appointment for this service. Bring your valid U.S. passport. The $50.00 fee is payable in cash or by credit card.

We will prepare the statement for you while you wait at the Embassy."

5. Documentation of name and age, for example passport or birth certificate. The documentation must consist of original documents or a copy certified by a Norwegian public authority.

6. In the case of people who are divorced according to foreign law, the divorce must be recognised by the county governor. The application form for this can be downloaded at fylkesmannen.no. The requirement for recognition will not apply if the divorce was carried out in another Nordic country, provided that both spouses were resident and had citizenship of a Nordic country at the time of the divorce.


Prepare all copies and just visit the tax office where your fiancee is registered with so you can get the test certificate or the paper which you need to get married in a Tingrett or church.

Might be easier for your fiance and you to fly to vegas and get married there.  Then with the marriage certificate in US, registered you two as married in Norway.  the reason is all the documents needed must have within valid period and your wedding or registration in Norway must fall within the valid period.

Collection of documents are merely a proof that you are eligible for marriage and obtain a license to marry.  This license is then eligible for you to book a church or an appointment to get married in court house.  If you are getting married in Oslo, there is only one court house and you need to see if you can get an appointment.  During spring and summer, it can be difficult to get an appointment in courthouse.  Courthouse does not work on weekends.
