Gemeente and GBLT after leaving

Hello,

We moved back to the UK after a 4 year stint in the Netherlands, but the Gemeente and GBLT are still taking payments 6 months on. We filled out all the required forms to deregister etc and it was all confirmed but they still take out money every month.

Interestingly, they are still paying us the equivalent of child benefit even though we have filled out a form twice, one version of which was sent to our UK address, stating we already get the UK version and don't want it. This actually is more than the amount they take but thats beside the point...

Is this normal or has anyone else has a similar experience and knows how to get it sorted?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Certainly not normal; all you can do is contact the Gemeente and ask them to stop. Child benefit comes from a different Government department, so I suggest you should contact them as well; this link will take you to the SVB website.

Thanks, we have filled out the forms multiple times and nothing ever seems to change but I will give it another shot. It is always difficult to speak to them as my Son is the only one fluent enough to speak to them in Dutch about anything complicated and so it becomes a bit pot luck if they will speak English. :-)

Perhaps close your Dutch bank account?

Yes that was my backup plan, tell the bank to stop the payments. I sure they would be in contact soon enough!

I would prefer to avoid this though as I have known more than one person in my line of work not being allowed in the country until they paid off a debt as they had an outstanding bill owed to the government. I still travel back quite regularly so its taking a bit of a risk doing so.

You can order the bank to block the payments but be ready you have to pay it all the "illegal" back. Also I would write a complain letter with all the proofs you have if they want to fine you afterwards.
