Hi everybody, we are looking to retire early and so far we have managed to narrow it down to 2 different places... very different from each other, as well - Ecuador and Greece. I am myself a Greek born in Romania (my grandparents came from Skiathos and from Ioannina - met in Romania), I am now living in Canada... and to make it more challenging, I am also thinking of retiring in either Greece or Ecuador... my husband is born in Romania and he is also Canadian. We love hiking, entertaining and cooking for friends - we love the city life and also the countryside...

Hi,well,it would certainly be easy for you to reside in Greece.I have lived here many years with my Greek husband and despite all the problems it is still possible if you are financially secure to enjoy a good life in these parts and actually still very safe.Whilst at our country house which is near Loutraki and Corinthos we met a UK couple on holiday at our village called Schinos and they said it was even better than Kefalonia where they had stayed from time to time,we are one hour half from Athens airport,extremely scenic,mountains and sea.Of course all of Greece is wonderful but its good to be able to get easily to the city or airport.Be careful of Islands as they have a serious problem with under funding for hospitals,clinics,equipment,staff and even ambulances,I have read of late of several people who died as a result of very poor services,a young woman on an Island,only thirty years old,so bear this in mind.Good luck to you both.

Good morning. I am Mike Sassi-Young. Australian-English.Phd English Literature. Left England in 1964 for the Hippie trail out to India and beyond. I worked and learnt the Fashion Leather production in Florence for 2 years. 1966 =best time of my life in Greece with leather manufacturing,took up electric bass playing,writing-publishing,working street markets.Now I return to Greece.Im 70. My wife Blossom, Taiwanese is an exhibiting artist. We are winding down living in Brisbane,Australia, selling the house at end of 2017....to start life in Greece. Intending to start an Art community with a Coffee Shop as its centre...for Visual Arts,Performing Art,Exhibition Gallery.We will locate first near Athens city. Hi everybody! I'm Alan Hadgis, IT Consultant in Columbus Ohio USA and am starting to organize some plans around moving to Greece. I'm 3rd generation Greek, read and can speak enough Greek to get around, and have been researching information on what all is involved in making a move. I'd love to immerse myself in the culture and reconnect with family we've lost touch with, and really experience Greece and all it has to offer.

I have some initial thoughts on approaching consulting agencies that may place me in Greece, and would love the opportunity to speak with any and everyone that has any advice to give and stories to share! Hi,does that mean you will obtain citizenship by way of your grandparents which I believe is your right,the Greek embassy nearest to you will have all the imformation.A Canadian near me obtained a British passport through either her parents or grandparents being Irish and Scottish.Best wishes and Greece is good despite everything but only if you are financially secure.

I am a married guy with kids living in the UK. It has always been my dream to retire to Greece or one of the Greek islands. But that is some time away ! If we can move there sooner, that would be even better. I would take any job I could find.

Any advice at all on the whole 'moving  to / working in Greece' experience from any expats would be more than welcome.

27yo American recently arrived in Athens with no plans of leaving. Not an "expat" per se (the class connotations don't apply); I'm skilled in general labor and the culinary world, formerly working as a courier, in warehouses and as a chef (5 years experience) before landing. Looking for free Greek lessons or language exchanges, opportunities to work, and anything inbetween.

Hello Spiritwalker,..Moving,Working in Greece...job situation is very difficult,however its possible to find a job with a lean towards tourism,tour rep etc from a company in the UK but this is usually seasonal,but in northern Greece they have lots of tourists in the winter in scenic areas where people ski,hotels etc..The problem is that bringing children here would limit their future job prospects and they would most likely leave for a fair chance in life unless of course you were to open a small farm selling the produce,if they ultimately wanted to do that.If someone has some income coming in from lets say property rent and bought land to be as self sufficient as possible,live in a small shack,tiny house,caravan because thats a small dream and they want to remove themselves from the never ending bills and rat race then its possible here.This is a great place for a group of people to get together,buy a good fertile piece of land with a couple of small houses on or put some whacky dwellings on it and enjoy being alive and on a beautiful planet,some income from somewhere else helps each month,bring down the out-goings financially.Medical care costs money.I wouldnt live on islands myself unless I had a job in tourism and the tourists sure have increased,one reason is of course the safety issue,some islands have tourist problems in a few hot-spots and thats not only from British,some of the Balkan tourist people and those working there can be a problem as we have seen of late.I was in the church yesterday evening and they had a service,it was very beautiful,a priest and his daughter I think were chanting/singing,then the priest went around shaking that incense thing all around the people,it was so nice,all the church is painted,incredible.You can have a bit of land here and as long as you dont make any footings for a building you will not be bothered in a shack etc..Land is very cheap now of course.Finding a job would be super difficult unless you find from an exterior company who operates here.The Brexit lark may alter ones plans but I think that a residency permit will  be available to non Europeans,it does seem strange to think of British people as non members of the EU because geographically of course they are,they just wont be members of the gang.Anyway I wish you well and you find your dreams.

I am adding to your message to Spiritwalker You gave some grass roots practical information...its another dynamic when your  messages almost addressed and encompass conversation  to other nations, not just an individual... and I can safely assume you came from a dam good family.Get your thinking hat on about how to get your skills into operation firstly to contribute to others as that's fun... and how your abilities can make money. From a long way away I get a safe assumption that your potential is much greater than you can believe. Im one of those "watch- your -back- people" after living in 20 countries and folks like you remind us of "the willingness to contribute" You never listened to your mother and maybe you never listen to me.Keep putting out the "possibles"
You may never realise the good ripple effects you create because you don't have extra, concerned, introverting attention on yourself. Your husband is a lucky man and what you have cant be bought. Much regards Mike

summer 2017 I am having internship in Impact Hub Athens, coworking place for social entrepreneurs, artists, freelancers... it amazing place. I chose it cuz it fits with my studies - regional development.
I am from Czech republic. I like Athens I am having nice time, visiting a lot of places around after work, especially beaches... although I dont like the way of transportation here.. i dont know why I am so crazy about this. For me it s a huge difference. If i consider to stay here, I would definitely think how i can improve this.

Hello Vassiliki ... my wife and I have been to Athens many times, primarily because we like to cruise from the port at Piraeus ... we plan to make Athens our headquarters for new travel and would like to rent something there in October ... I should say we are 'bang for the buck' people and not luxurious spenders ...

When I am in Greece I see 'excellent' pricing for rentals but when I inquire 'online' I see horrible pricing ... Do you represent 'local' pricing or the 'inflated' tourist pricing? ... :-) ... just asking no offence intended ... Daniel

My name is Catherine and with my husband Guy, both from Belgium, we decided 8 years ago to fin a home in Greece. We finally ended up in the region of Messinia, Pylos. The main reason being that we love golf playing on a regular base. We came first for a few months a year but now live there about the entire year and consider our house as our real home now. We were surprised by the kindness of our Greek friends our new foreign friends from Italy, France, Uk, Holland and many Greek Canadians which live around us. We found our house via a very good agency in Pylos. I can give you the name whenever you wish. Surprisingly they accompanied us on all needs we had the first year and longer.
Now I started to work as an independent consultant there and I am super happy.
The Financial crisis of Greece didn't make us fear at all, on the contrary it became a challenge to support people around us the best way we could. Greece is a fabulous country to live, work, learn, apport our knowledges, and so many more...
