Tips for travelling with uneasy pets

The question in context of this link is very strange. These are NOT tips for how to make a dog feel good while traveling. This site is about what penalties one must pay for breaking laws. And it gives the rules how dogs must be secured in vehicles to avoid being fined. Must be much better sites about dog psychology in such situations! Most dogs don’t seem to have a problem in cars. But if a dog can’t handle traveling then it shouldn’t be forced, leave it at home or with friends if possible. If a travel is necessary, then a vet can suggest a mild tranquilizer to lower anxiety. Such things are often used when dogs have to fly separated from the owners.

While I agree that its a strange website to use, there are a few tips on there. We always just dealt with the whining/anxiety of a pet the best we could. Eventually the dog would always just fall asleep and we would get a break. If your dog doesnt like cars, I feel like there isnt much you can do.

See my family are planning a trip to visit our Grandparents as soon as we are allowed after this pandemic and they absolutely love dogs so we wanted to bring ours along but they live a two hour car journey away so we think thats a little long to drive with a distressed pet unless we can find a way to calm him down.

Trains are a less stressful option for dogs.

That makes sense I suppose trains have more space

Our daughter gets tranquilisers from the vet for her 2 dogs if she takes them anywhere; yet when I take them anywhere I never have a problem.

Same with fireworks - in my daughter's house, both dogs are under the bed, in our house, they are outside in the garden watching and sniffing the smells.

Could be because both dogs were brought up in our house, so they see it as home.

Thats crazy, maybe they see you as comforting parent figures and trust no harm will happen to them around you so are not afraid, it makes sense

To be honest, I think the major problem faced by all our pets is that we tend to think of them and treat them as if they were human.  I was talking to a neighbour the other day, she thought her goldfish looked hungry ......... really.

haha you could be right, before we got Bruno we had another dog called Molly and she was such a princess! She was a mini Jack Russel and she definitely beleived she was a human she didnt like other dogs at all but loved people. She slept inside with us so I think she really saw herself as another sibling.
