Apostilles for marriage certificate

meghanlaw93

Does anybody have a recent experience getting an apostille? I went to the Burgeramt to register my marriage from the USA, and I was told that I need to get an apostille. I've been doing some research but am a bit confused about how to actually get this done. Any guidance is appreciated!

I would assume the US embassy or consulate should provide this. I had to get this from them as an American citizen when I married in Germany years ago.

Hello, Meghan!

You get apostilles from your home country.

There are document processing companies that do that for you.

So either have some one take your marriage certificate to the appropriate authority in your state or municipality to get it apostilled or have one of these companies do it for you.  In Germany this hets done very quickly even from oversees, in Canada it is better done through a document servicing company if you are overseas.  In the USA it should be less complicated than in Canada because Canada is not part of the "The Hague Convention" on apostilles.  Google it in your state or send me your state and the municipality that issued your marriage certificate in a private message, and I will look up the solution.
