You may want to check accommodation in Katajanokka area then. But it's quite near city center so if you don't mind to walk or use the tram, there'll be much more options to choose from.

So in Katajanokka area there are some hotels and hostels to choose from, for example:

http://www.eurohostel.eu/fi , a hostel type accommodation

http://www.bwkatajanokka.fi/ , a nice quality hotel in former prison building.

Is it very cold there. A normal thick jacket will be fine?

I guess it depends what you consider cold The last few days has been gray and rainy, but next weekend there should be +13-15 celsius and sunny. But things happen to change Evenings still a little chilly so a thick jacket won't do bad at all. Enjoy Helsinki!
