I think there has been some fear-mongering regarding Spanish deportations, but, as far as I know, Spain has said that it won't be kicking Britons out.

Bulgaria is in the same situation as Spain and the rest of the EU in relation to Britons abroad:

- You don't NEED a residence permit or a visa, in order to travel and visit Bulgaria. British passport holders can spend up to 90 days out of 180 days in Bulgaria. For many who are still living/working in UK, 90 days will be plenty.

- If you want to spend more than 90 days, then you need to get a Residence permit. The previous regime (pre-Brexit) granted UK citizens easier admission (proof of funds, proof of health insurance) as EU members. Now, you have to first apply for D visa at Bulgarian Embassy in London, then apply for Residence Permit in Bulgaria.

D visa is granted for specific categories, the easiest being retiree (proof of pension required), student, or TRO (Trade Representative Office). If you want to retire in Bulgaria, and you have a UK pension, then the D visa should be straightforward.

Megs, it all depends if you already applied for and obtained a Bulgarian residency card before December 31, 2020. If you've already sorted that out, no problem, you can go live there.

If you don't already have a residency card, then Gwyn explained the process now. Quite a few of us unable to get residency sorted out last year due to Covid need to deal with the new system. It's more complicated than it was before Brexit, but not impossible. For holidays in Bulgaria of up to three months twice a year, you can come and go as you please. But for living there full-time or to stay longer than 90 days at a time, we need to apply for a D visa in London as the first step to longer-term residency.
