Regional weather

Mel1702

Good afternoon, can you give me some idea of weather conditions throughout the year for the fit areas please? Have checked out in the net & it’s a bit limited. Thanks! VT, 50km west of Varna & 60km west of Burgas.

Bulgaria is not a very big country: less than half the area of the UK (and 1/10 of the population, BTW)... so I don't think there's massive regional variation. The climate is "temperate continental" which means hot summers, cold winters, and four distinct seasons. Quite a lot of sunny days, I think.

The winter is pretty cold so there is a mandated winter tires season from mid-November to beginning of March.

Last summer, my village had some days that were over 35 degrees (C). While this last winter we had a couple of weeks where night time temperature was below -10 (C).

The mountains/altitude can have a significant effect, so I noticed that Bansko could be 10 degrees lower than Plovdiv during the summer. This affects Sofia too with Mount Vitosha.

If you're in the south near the Greece/Turkey border, then it might seem a little warmer.

Veliko Tarnovo district is only about 70km north of my house. I've driven up a few times, and not noticed a big temperature change.

Because the summers are very hot, most feel the need for some air conditioning, at least some of the time. So if you have to install them for summer use, then you may as well get hot/cold inverters, and use them for winter heating too. This is very typical of Bulgarian homes, compared with the UK, where we typically would have central heating for the winter, and no AC for the summer.

Well it depends VT has a land climate and the other areas have a sea climate.

Though hot summers and cold winters is true for all of Bulgaria, I notice there's some difference between areas.

A gardening zone map of Bulgaria shows everything from zone 9 (on the southern part of the Black Sea coast) to 5 high in the mountains, which gives about 10C difference in winter temps. This map isn't useful for zooming in on very local areas, but gives an idea of expected winter temperature ranges: https://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-b … elsius.php

In the weather app on my phone I follow the weather for a few Bulgarian cities, and there is often a noticeable difference. VT is both hotter in summer and colder in winter than Dobrich, for example, while Varna is less cold in winter, and less warm in summer than Dobrich, thanks to being closer to the sea. It's often only a few degrees, but that can make a big differemce to comfort, especially when wind is taken into account.
