Home decoration ideas for expats in Bulgaria

Bhavna

Hello,

After moving to Bulgaria, setting up home and turning your accommodation into your personal abode can be a great way to start off your new life and feel at home. We would like to know whether expats are keen on decorating and furnishing to warm up their space whether for the festive season or all year-round.

Upon renting a new apartment or house in Bulgaria, do you redesign your accommodation to suit your taste? Are your choices influenced by price, climate, etc…?

Have you brought any interior decoration items from your home country or did you consider buying any once in Bulgaria?

As an expat in Bulgaria do you find it worthy to invest in home decor? Could you share what you have bought and perhaps some interesting places to shop for home decor?

How would you describe the local style of decoration? Have you picked up any item which reflects the local style?

Would you be inspired by the festive season to decorate and add a festive touch to your living space?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

Redecorating or decorating is a challenge in Bulgaria.

Many ex-pats are used to more affluent accommodations for furnishings.   I have furnished two homes and a 110 unit hotel and am happy to share my experience.

Local Providers.  I have had great luck with local providers who either make or have contacts for Bg. Style furniture--generally smaller than some or most ex-pats are used to or in the case of beds---almost to the ground they are so low.  My experience in Kitchens has been fabulous and find that many Bg craftsman equal Italian providers at dramatically less cost.  I can upload pictures.

I have purchased complete bathroom units including sinks (without hardware) from China and have had good luck with quality and competitive prices.   These are stand-alone wood units versus many compressed wood shavings used by Bg craftsman.  Buyer beware and do not spend money unless you are sure of the provider.   You will pay import fees so it is a matter of taste.   If you like Bg style stay with the local provider.

I have purchased all of my electrical items, wiring, lighting, etc. in Plovdiv as well as thousands of m2 of travertine, and terrazzo tiles and marble.  Prices, quality, and delivery were top notch.

For our personal villa we have purchased furniture directly from Wayfair and delivered it in a container.  The price including shipping was only slightly higher than local but provided elegant western style furniture and beds of a height we are used to.  I will locate some pictures and upload.
