Best affordable places to live in Panama

I'm looking for recommendations for places to live in Panama outside of Panama City that fit a fixed income. I love the idea of a walkable location with good public transportation that feels urban, island, or mountain-based. Ideally, it would also have shopping centers, community events, and a bilingual environment (both English and Spanish). I know places like David, El Carmen, and Boquete—are there any other hidden gems that check these boxes?

Hi Faith! Great question. Here are a few places beyond David and Boquete that come close to what you describe:

Coronado (beach, about 1 hour from the city): probably the most bilingual community outside Panama City. It has a big expat population, supermarkets, a mall area, restaurants and frequent buses to the city along the Pan-American Highway. The town is spread out, but the main commercial strip is easy to manage without a car.

Chitré (Azuero Peninsula): a hidden gem if you want a real small city. It’s flat and walkable, has buses and taxis, shopping, and some of the best cultural festivals in Panama. Rents are lower and the expat community is growing, though you’ll hear more Spanish than English.

Volcán (Chiriquí highlands): a cooler, quieter and more affordable alternative to Boquete, with a friendly expat community. It’s about 1 hour from David for bigger shopping.

Bocas Town (Isla Colón): the island option. It’s walkable, very bilingual (many locals speak English), with water taxis instead of buses and a lively community. Shopping is limited, so plan on occasional trips to the mainland.

El Valle de Antón (mountains): a small, walkable mountain town with a Sunday market and cool weather, about 2 hours from the city. It’s quieter, with fewer services.

One tip for a fixed income: if you receive a lifetime pension of at least $1,000/month, the Pensionado visa gives you residency plus discounts on things like medical bills, transport, restaurants and entertainment, which really stretches your budget.
