Best rent until you get the lay of the land. You can live/drive there for 3 months with a US driver's license.  I lived there for 1 year and there are many sub-cultures there. It all depends on what you like. There is just too much diversity from one place to another to give you the info you are requesting. If you are OK with the warmer weather, then Los Santos is nice and generally safe. If you need cooler weather, then I recommend Volcan or El Valle Anton. Remember the ocean is only 1 hour or less away no matter where you live. Stay away from Colon or various "red zones" in Panama city unless you fancy getting mugged. Too many variables to consider to give you any real good advice. Ask more specific questions and I will be happy to answer them for you.

Have a place in gated Playa Blanca for 1k a month, top floor overlooking huge pool.  Id agree, plan on 6 monts exploring Panama, playa blanca good middle ground for exploring everything. 

That’s great. I have a house about 57  km from there. Sometimes we visit Farallón or Santa Clara when we are there.  Last year we rented a weekend getaway for my mother-in-law at Playa Blanca. My wife and I have family in Penonome and Panama City. Hope all goes well for you.  I have spent much time in Panama and am familiar with the region.
