Carbon Offset Programs Offered by Airlines

Guest2022

A number of airlines serving the Dominican Republic offer the passenger the opportunity to calculate the carbon footprint they make with their flight and make a payment to offset that environmental impact.

Some of the airlines involved are:

Delta
United
Jet Blue
Air Canada
British Airways

There is a growing grassroots movement started in Sweden and which has spread quickly to a number of countries in Europe which call itself 'Flygskam', literally flight shame.

Flying adds 2.5% to global carbon emissions and to give one an idea of the polution; a flight from London to New York in economy has the same carbon footprint as a small car use for a year. Saw this in Linkedin this week and that shocked me.

The participating airlines allow you to calculate your footprint and make a balancing payment which would be of the order of sixty dollars for the flight mentioned.

It should be note that the UK government already has a tax in place for air travel to compensate for carbon emissions which applies to all airlines landing/flying to/from the UK in the UK and is included in the ticket price.

Many people take climate change seriously especially the young and so this thread is about awareness, and for those that may wish to look up the mentioned airline programs and contribute on there next DR flight.
