Buying a car in the Dominican Republic...

New Chinese Auto brands V. Older Established Japanese Auto brands

It would seem that many Chinese brands such as Changan, Geely, Jetour, and JAC are experiencing a relatively massive growth in DR. Could anyone speak of their long-term reliability? Any personal experience with any or some of them? Any reason why one would choose to buy a 5-10 year-old Japanese for what it would probably cost to drive out of a car lot with a brand new Chinese of the same category? Please forgive my naivety. I’m just trying to gather enough information to make the right choice in due time.

It is still pretty difficult to get parts for these newer Chinese vehicles.


The older Japanese models have long term reliability, everyone can fix them and often parts are interchangeable and easy to get!!!

When I was looking for a car I was told by several salesmen that the Chinese models are more difficult to get repaired and parts for.  And depending on what dealership you buy from the warranty may not be that great.
