Hello - I am excited

kennethb

My name is Kenneth.  I presently reside in NE Texas.  I am retired (SS and USMC). I have traveled some internationally while in the Marine Corps and after.  I intend to make an exploritory visit in Sept.  I am interested in the Pacific Side probably South.  If I like as I suspect, I will liquidate here and move there renting at a number of different locations over 6 months to a year and then start looking to purchase a place.  Semi Rural about 1 hectre.  I am looking for all advice and hopefully for a mentor or more.  Thank You Ken

Hello, my husband and I are from Atlanta, Tx...close to Texarkana, Tx. We are also researching and preparing to move to Costa Rica.

do you have a time line...  I am planning to go in Sept for 10-12 days as my first preliminary...

We did a lot of research before our inaugural trip to Costa Rica.  We had previously spent years checking out Mexico and Belize so had a good idea as to what we were looking for.  Our first trip to Costa Rica we put on right around 2700km in a three week period.  We did find a couple of areas / properties that we liked and ended up purchasing three acres in November of 2010.  We have been back three times getting things in order, planning, landscaping, etc.  We have been planning our house and have most of the preliminary work done and will be starting construction after the rainy season this year in preparation for our retirement move in the spring of 2014.  In the interim we have been taking Spanish classes in Canada.  If we can be of any help, let us know.
Cheers .... Terry & Viv.

Terry - Viv,

Thank you for your response.  What areas were you looking at?? Where did you decide to settle?  Can you give me an approximate discription of the property and if possible an approximate price?

Thank you,
Ken

I have been in Costa Rica for two months. It is a beautiful country though the cost of living is far too high. It is essentially the same as the Us and in many cases more so. Groceries are very expensive. The Pacific coast is gorgeous and the Costa Rican people are very friendly.

Kenneth,

Costa Rica is about the size of W. Virginia, but it is incredibly diverse in climate, topography, and cost of living. You really have to cultivate a different mind set to live here that I dare say 90% of the people in the States and Canada just can not do. You have exactly the right plan to come here and explore without putting down roots for 6 months to a year and try out different areas. The only caution I have for you in that is to really quiz locals about the weather as you will not be able to experience a full year in one place and weather patterns can be very different in locations only 10 Km apart!

Yes, the southern part of the country is the best, but then we are very biased, lol!! We live near San Isidro de El General at about 1300 meters elevation and love it here. We are coming up on 4 years living here continuously. Feel free to drop me a line (contact info at my blog) if you have questions regarding this area.

Pura vida,
