Hi welcome to Expats,

Yes there are international Doctors and medical staff here, you can add your C.V. in our jobs section or have a look to see if any jobs in your field are being currently posted.

Hopefully, one of the Doctors we have as members will give you a more detailed answer such as language barriers, how to get in touch with hospitals in your field how the process works etc.

You could also have a look at vietnammedicalpractice com which has been mentioned before which covers Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh & Da Nang to see if they are needing staff or point you in the right way.

I visited VN in 2018 for a couple weeks. I am corresponding with a charming Vietnamese lady who is unbelievably gracious and lovely.

I plan to come back this June for another visit. HCMC area.

If I have a Masters in teaching and am certified in the US for 16 years teaching English, do I still need to go through a "job-placement" company that wants to charge me for getting a TESOL and other educational qualifications? What are the chances I can just go teach rock and roll guitar in a music store somewhere haha.

Welcome to the forum,

We understand there are many reasons for wanting to move here, members are glad to get away from it, please no politics or religion on the forum (Code of Conduct)

If you have a teaching license and/or degree, you technically should not need to take a TESOL course to obtain a Work Permit (which comes after you are hired,not before.) However, you may find that you need a local lawyer to advocate that for you if you are initially denied by the bureaucracy.   Also taking a TESOL course once in Vietnam is not all that bad a way to go.  A friend who was a retired teacher from Australia told me that his course taught him a lot of good games, which would be terrible for someone who needed real instruction in teaching, but which was just right for him.

I would recommend that you come to Vietnam on the longest tourist visa you can get. Right now that is not long but that may change. Have multiple copies of your CV ready and have it stress your years of experience.  Once there, just go door to door in whichever city you are settled in and look for work.  Apply directly to schools to avoid any agent cuts to your pay rate.  By far the best teachers where I used to work were those who had taught regular subjects in their home countries.  I think the owner wisely made it a point to hire such teachers if she could, as she had several on the payroll.

Be sure to bring all your documentation.  If you will be in either HCM or Hanoi it is actually easier to have them authenticated by going to the Consulate/Embassy and then through the appropriate office.    That office is DOLISA which should serve as a good search term to bring up information on how to do this.   Any letters of recommendation from your principal will not be needed for the Work Permit but could help you be hired by one of the better schools.

Just as an aside, are you fully vested in you pension even if it is at less than the full rate?  You may feel now like you can work forever, but I can assure you that will change.

Hi Sam, Welcome to the forum, a good start would be to post a new thread on the Hanoi part of our forum asking to meet with locals, maybe tell them a little about your hobbies or interests and invite them to send you a PM private message if they would like to meet up or have any activities that you may be interested in.

We have members who have lived there who can give you other ideas and tips.
