Anyone had similar experience with a taxi at a local airport?

WillyBaldy

A taxi driver kind of tried to rip me off and I was just wondering it if ever happened to anyone else, out of curiosity.

To make it short: I arrived at Rach Gia airport, a very small airport, and there were very few taxis. Some of the few taxi drivers started taking two clients at a time, without really asking them if they were okay with this. I was the second client in the same cab as someone else (I did not protest as I didn't want to wait too long anyway) so he did drop off the first client, counter was at 80k, the client paid... then he continues to my destination but I noticed he did not reset the counter. I told him that the other guy paid 80k, so I was not going to pay that 80k again (anh ay da tra tien 80k, anh se khong tra tieng 80k nua) and the driver laughed and set the counter to zero.

I'd expect this practice in Mexico or India, but I'm surprised it's happening here. Did it ever happen to anyone here whenever only few taxis available?

PS: Thinking about it, the first guy actually got ripped off for real, he paid for a part of my trip. Normally the 80k should have been shared.

Your protest carried a lot more weight because it was made in Vietnamese. No doubt he was surprised and aware of the fact he wasn't dealing with a common dummy.
I didn't even know Rach Gia had an airport. The last time I was there was 20 years ago. There was a guy doing work on the road to Ha Tien. He was sitting in the road pounding rocks into the roadway with a hammer. Things have evidently improved.

Ho hum. Sounds pretty normal really. Anyway, you got the problem sorted out, so let it slide. Don't let the thought of losing a couple dollars bring you down. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks, I actually saved money because first dude covered the first 80k of travel.
