Caution on working without a 'work permit'...I've been here 15 years and know two Americans and one Brit that were removed from Vietnam and told not to try to return.  They were paying off the local PD, and Immigration's did a raid unannounced at a facility. 
Not really worth it if caught.  For you to 'work' in Vietnam you need a work permit, which means you need a sponsor.  The one thing about that 'work permit', is that it is owned by your sponsor and only allows you to teach for them.  Many don't know the real rules required by Immigration and Labor.  If you are teaching at three centers, you are required to have a permit from each facility. 
You can work if I remember correctly if you teach at local schools without a permit if the school gets permission from the Ministry of Education and Training.  This permission has to be also approved by the Labour Department also.
I've been instructing TOEFL, TOEIC and Business courses for the past 6 years with permission from both of the above and have no 'permit' or 'teachers certificate'.  I've been instructing for the past 15 years at centers, schools, and universities from Hanoi to Saigon and between.  I have yet to have pay anyone the 'coffee money' that so many seem to mention.  For the past 10 years I've stayed away from the local ESL centers due to their inability to type up a contract or provide a work permit.

This entire thread seems to be based on getting the horse before the cart.  To mrinternational:  You are asking about permanent residency in a country that you have never been to, and even contemplating marriage to women that you have never met.  You say you are too introverted to be a teacher but you wish to explore private lessons which may require self promotion to some extent, particularly if you do not have the implicit endorsement of a hired job elsewhere. 

Please allow me to sincerely suggest that you take enough for a round trip ticket and enough for a few months travel within Vietnam (maybe $1500 a month if you are frugal) get a tourist visa and see how you like it.  Get the lay of the land, and if you are still curious, the nature of the women.  Even that will not be enough to decide if you want to commit a major portion of your life to living in Vietnam but at least it will give you some idea if you really want to give it a try.  You may decide after a short while that you can't stand the place, or you could love it.  Typing at your computer, and even reading the sage advice offered on this forum     will not lead to an answer.

We know that you have your own means of expression.  Some new participants may be confused by it, but most of the old timers here have come to appreciate your point of view.    Sometimes fewer words say more.
