Do retired foreigners need to pay for Vietnam visa if they live in VN?

Dear friends,

My boss is going to retired next year and he wonders if he has to pay for Vietnam visa if he moves here to live? And does he have to prolong visa every 3 months?

Retired status (or non-status) doesn't come into play. In other words :

Your title changes to "Do ~~retired~~ foreigners need to pay for Vietnam visa if they live in VN?" and your sentence becomes:

"My boss ~~is going to retired next year and he~~ wonders if he has to pay for Vietnam visa if he moves here to live? And does he have to prolong visa every 3 months?

Since he won't be working, he won't need a Work Permit. Without a Work Permit, it's hard to get a Temporary Residence Card. So yes and yes....or whatever other foreigners are doing with their visas, including the border run after 2 extensions...or a heavy envelope full of bills for a non-border run.

Hello MiaTNB,

As the previous poster mentioned unlike many other burgeoning retirement destinations Vietnam does not (yet?) have a special visa for retirees.

Your boss would most likely need to stay in Vietnam on 3 month tourist visas at least in the beginning while looking into more long term possibilities (though if he doesn't want to work here at all - does not want to start a legal business here or even teach a little English on the side - and also does not want to marry there may not be any long term possibilities).

You may want to check some of the various threads on very recent changes regarding tourist visas. Previously many people were able to renew them somewhat indefinitely without leaving the country but it sounds to me like many of us will have to start leaving the country and reapplying for a new visa every three or maybe six months.

He can find an extra job and get a Temporary Residence Card, that is the way might help him to live long in Vietnam without having visa extended.
Otherwise, 3 months multiple entry visa is required.

The only foreigner who does not need a visa in Vietnam is a dead foreigner. But, I think he needs some other documents to rest there, otherwise they will send him back to where he came from as well. Really hate to put it that way, but it is just the way it is in Vietnam, right now.

I'm going to cheat them out of that one, I'm getting cremated, then I can stay in VN forever , ( providing my wife doesn't lose my ashes ), , then no Visa required ever again.
