Quality of customer service in Vietnam

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in Vietnam, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in Vietnam?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in Vietnam?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

In general, I would say that the customer service I have received in VN over the years has been satisfactory and positive. However, at the same time, I'm not a big consumer guy so I don't have a lot of high expectations.

That might be the best tip: Have limited expectations.

Of course, the main challenge is the language barrier, but there's usually someone around who speaks at least basic English, and the translator app on your phone can be utilized.

Do expats get treated differently than locals? Yes, sometimes local shops will serve the VNese customer first. I just shrug it off... those people will still be their customers in the years to come while the foreigner will likely soon be gone.

Probably the most irritating thing is staff using their smartphones to watch videos while on duty in restaurants and coffeeshops but that is hardly unique to VN.
